Taking your vehicle on the Alaska Ferry

Here is a diagram of the standard measurements needed when making your reservation that includes a vehicle

The Kennicott and the Tustumena are the only vessels in the fleet that have elevator lifts to load and offload vehicles. This is a very important factor when booking an overlength vehicle that is pulling a trailer or car.

Traveling with your car on the Alaska Ferry is a very popular way to travel. It gives you the most freedom once you have reached your destination in Alaska.

There are a few points to keep in mind when planning a trip with your car.

1. When you bring your vehicle you are required to check in earlier than those without a vehicle.

2. You cannot sleep in your car (or any vehicle) while the ship is underway. That is Coast Guard Regulations. Periodically throughout the sail you will hear the Purser announce over the PA System that the car deck will be unlocked for 15 minutes if you need to retrieve anything during sailing or feed and walk your pets.

3. Keeping #2 in mind, remember to bring important medications etc with you when you are first boarding.

4. All cars are subject to search at check in for standard security procedures.

5. Your vehicle neasurements are determined using the year make and model of your vehicle. Terminal personnel will re-measure and adjust your bill accordingly if they deem necessary. If you have mistaken with measurements and your vehicle is longer than you initially stated you could be denied boarding due to space allotted at the time of reservation.

6. AMHS is not responsible for vehicles parked on the car deck during sail. While there are very few incidents, it is up to your good judgment to keep your vehicle locked while on the vessel.

7. You will NOT be able to remove your vehicle when the ship pulls into ports UNLESS it is included on your confirmed itinerary. Cars are loaded in the order of when they will be offloading making it difficult if not impossible to remove an unscheduled vehicle.

8. There is no weight restriction for passenger cars and you may pack them with household goods, if desired.

9. If there are firearms in the car, they MUST be declared at the time of check-in and to the Terminal Agent who is loading cars.

Unaccompanied Vehicles

The Alaska Marine Highway does allow vehicles to sail unaccompanied. However, depending on the port there is a unaccompanied fee attached.

Many people ask about "shipping" their car on the ferry. Let me be clear. You "cannot ship" your car on the ferry. You can send it unaccompanied but it is up to you to arrange for loading and offloading at each end. Vehicles that are not removed from the vessel are assessed a penalty of $100 and the vehicle is impounded where additional impound fees may be assessed.

All unaccompanied reservations must be made though the Juneau office of the Alaska Marine Highway at 1-800-642-0066, during regular business hours.  Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4pm AST

Oversized Commercial Vehicles

All oversized commercial reservations must be made though the Juneau office of the Alaska Marine Highway at 1-800-642-0066, Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4pm AST.
