The M/V Matanuska, colloquially known as "The Mat" is a main-line ferry and the original Malaspina-class mainline vessel for the Alaska Marine Highway. The Mat has been in the ferry system for over 40 years. As a mainline ferry, which means it serves the larger of the Inside Passage communities such as Ketchikan, Petersburg, and Sitka, it's route expands the entirety of the Inside Passage, often beginning runs in Bellingham WA and running to the northernmost panhandle community of Skagway Alaska.

> The Matanuska is nearly identical to it's sister ship, the M/V Malaspina. (which is no longer past of the AMHS fleet)
> The Matanuska's amenities include a hot-food cafeteria; solarium; forward aft, movie, and business lounges and gift shop.
> Named after the Matauska Glacier - The name was derived from the Russian term for the "Copper River People".
